Senator Manchin Reinforces Need for Better Broadband Maps Based on CCA Study

Jun 03, 2021
This week, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel reiterating his longstanding concern that the FCC must improve its broadband coverage maps. In the letter, Senator Manchin specifically cited a recent Competitive Carriers Association (“CCA”) study that found “pervasive errors” in the FCC’s data used in the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. Senator Manchin stated that such errors are “not a surprise” as he has been “sounding the alarm on this three-alarm fire for years,” and encouraged the FCC to continue its work on “fixing these maps.”

In a statement, CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, “I commend Senator Manchin for his long-time leadership on improving the FCC’s broadband maps. As CCA’s study showed, pervasive errors in broadband data risk distributing scarce broadband funding to wealthy urban areas that don’t need it, while leaving behind rural areas that lack connectivity, including in West Virginia. We look forward to working with Senator Manchin and others on a bipartisan basis to help the FCC fix the RDOF Phase I errors, improve its broadband maps, and truly help close the digital divide.”
